There are only two of these 'Thurdendales' or 'Hooped quarts' known.
There is still some confusion regarding the capacity of a Thurdendale and in a recent article by Dr Ronald Homer, Journal of the Pewter Society, Spring 1996, he concludes that the Thurdendale was a measure to hold one third of a gallon of ale, and that this lot and the other recorded measure owned by Stanley Shemmell, sold Bonhams Chester October 2006 lot 110, should be deemed 'hooped quart' measures.
