Frans Francken II presumably served his apprenticeship in the studio of his father Frans Francken I (1542-1616) but it is thought that he also trained in Paris with his uncle Hieronymus Francken I. In 1605 Frans Francken II became a master in the Antwerp Guild of St Luke, and served there as deacon in 1616. He produced mainly small cabinet pictures with historical, mythological or allegorical themes, and there are paintings by him in all large public collections in Europe.
