Lot Essay

The sitters were the children of Arthur Holdsworth (1701-1753) of Dartmouth and his wife Marcella, the daugther and heiress of Thomas Gibbs. The three girls are respectively Mary, Sarah and Anne. Arthur later settled at Widdicombe and was Governor of Dartmouth Castle. He commissioned Arthur Devis to paint a portrait of himself with two friends, which is now in the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.
