Lot Essay

A study for the lost painting formerly on the left-hand wall of the first chapel on the left of Sant'Onofrio, Rome (F. Titi, Studio di Pittura, Scoltura et Architettura, nelle Chiese di Roma, Rome, 1987, II, no. 175). The composition of the painting is close to that of the present study; the most marked difference is the group of the three Maries in the lower left corner. Another study which clearly predates the present drawing is in the Uffizi (V. Casale, 'La dinastia dei pittori Ricciolini', Del disegno all'opera compiuta, Perugia, 1982, fig. 30).
