Lot Essay

Pierre Nogaret (1718 -1771) maître 1745 in Lyon, France, was among the most widely-known 18th Century ébénistes outside the capital, along with the Hache dynasty of Grenoble-based ébénistes. Nogaret is famed for the curvaceous lines of his productions, and more particularly the waved uprights, shaped seatrails, and arm-supports 'en coup-de fouet' of his chairs, which always retained a natural elegance. A related fauteuil by Nogaret is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIème siècle, Paris, 2002, p. 652, fig. a.
