Lot Essay

The pattern for this elegant cylinder bureau is derived from Thomas Sheraton's design for 'A Cylinder Desk and Bookcase', illustrated in his Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, London, 1792, pl. 47. A desk similar to the current lot, particularly in the arrangement of its interior, belonging to Norman Adams, Ltd., is illustrated in R. Fastnedge, Sheraton Furniture, London, 1962, pl. 60.
Another similar cylinder bureau veneered in rosewood was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 7 July 1994, lot 62.
