Lot Essay

This pattern of armchair is derived from the celebrated model originally supplied to Anthony Ashley-Cooper, 4th Earl of Shaftesbury (1710-1771) for St. Giles's House, Dorset. This long suite of armchairs and sofas is now dispersed and a list of sales was published in the catalogue entry for a pair sold by the 10th Earl of Shaftesbury, Christie's, London, 8 July 1999, lot 30. Whilst no secure attribution can be made for the St Giles's suite, cabinet-makers William Vile (d. 1767) and William Hallett Senior (d. 1781), are linked to several payments recorded in the St. Giles's Household Account Book of 1745-52. The 10th Earl of Shaftesbury sold a large collection of highly important furniture and sculpture from St Giles's at Christie's, London, 26 June 1980.
