A PAIR OF FRENCH 'ANTIQUARIAN' ORMOLU-MOUNTED AND EBONY CABINETS-ON-STAND
THE CARVED EBONY PANELS AND FRIEZE THIRD QUARTER 17TH CENTURY, THE STANDS AND CARCASE 19TH CENTURY
Each decorated with a mythological scene to the door depicting battle scenes within a shaped cartouche and surmounted by cherubs, ripple-moulded borders and auricular grotesques, the rectangular gadrooned top above a rectangular frieze decorated with battle scenes, each door enclosing an interior with two adjustable shelves above a waved stand centred by a mask, on foliate-headed cabriole legs terminating in scroll and ball feet

Lot Essay

The finely relief-carved ebony panels re-used in this pair of cabinets are related to the oeuvre of Jean Macé, from Blois. Trained in the Low Countries he has been credited with some of the most elaborately worked ebony cabinets of the 17th century, including the Endymion Cabinet in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
