67 in. (170 cm.) high, excluding chain
40 in. (101 cm.) length of chain
34 in. (86.5 cm.) diameter
Provenance
Possibly Henry Butler, 13th Viscount Mountgarret (1816-1900).
Special notice
No VAT will be charged on the hammer price, but VAT at 15% will be added to the buyer's premium which is invoiced on a VAT inclusive basis.
Sale room notice
The provenance is probably incorrect. This balloon chandelier is most likely to have been acquired or presented by Richard, 17th Viscount Mountgarret (1936-2004). An incident involving a balloonist attempting to land on Lord Mountgarret's grouse moor in 1982 during a shooting party led to him adopting the balloon as a personal motif.
Lot Essay
Henry, 13th Viscount Mountgarret, in 1844 married Frances Rawson of Nidd Hall, Yorkshire: it was from his wife's aunt that Lord Mountgarret inherited Nidd Hall and a fortune in 1891.
