Lot Essay

Claude I Sené (1724-1792), maître in 1743. Member of the Sené dynasty of Parisian ébénistes, he was the son of Jean Sené (dit le Père) whose workshop he took over circa 1747. Claude I Sené's work production consisted predominantly in Louis XV seats. Although Claude I worked until 1780, he is known to have only produced a very limited amount of Louis XVI seats, making this pair of fauteuils particularly exceptional. Among the rare Louis XVI seats by Claude I Sené, a white-painted marquise on fluted legs was sold anonymously, Christie's, Monaco, 4 December 1988, lot 207.
