Lot Essay

The field maple veneers of this charming commode have been stained to simulate tortoiseshell or marble, a technique also associated with the London firm of Coxed and Wooster. In fact, Stalker and Parker's 1688 Treatise of Japanning and Varnishing outlines a technique whereby the chosen veneer is first stained yellow or red and then rubbed with 'lampblack' (soot) giving it the desired three-dimensional effect.
