Lot Essay

Either Jacques-Jérôme l'aîné Gudin who was received maitre in 1750 or Jacques-Jérôme Gudin who was received maitre in 1762.
The two maidens flanking the dial of this mantel clock are allegorical figures of Law and of Prudence. Other examples of this model have been recorded with a movement supplied by the horloger Lepaute, including one sold, Millon et Associés, Paris, 18 June 1997, lot 69. A closely-related clock, but with patinated-bronze figures and with differences to the plinth was in the Boyer sale in 1905 and is illustrated in S. de Ricci, Louis XVI Furniture, Paris, 1913, p.151.
