Lot Essay

The 'Duke of Buckingham' inscription on one of the armchairs suggests this set of dining-chairs belonged to the Duke of Buckingham and may have been included in the famed thirty-seven day sale of the contents of Stowe House, Buckingham, Christie's house sale, 15 August 1848 and thirty-seven days thereafter. This set of chairs could have formed part of lots 29, 494-498, 843-844 in that sale.
