Lot Essay

The gothic splat pattern, with quatrefoiled fret, derives from a parlour chair design in Thomas Chippendale's, Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. XVI. A related splat features on a set of chairs illustrated in M. Harris & Sons, The English Chair, London, 1937, pl. LXVII.
