Château Pétrus--Vintage 1953
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Levels: one top and one upper/mid shoulder; nicked label, lightly corroded capsules
"At a time jointly owned by the formidable Mme Loubat who had met her match in Jean-Pierre Moueix. To quote Harry Waugh once more, tasting from the barrel: 'Fine in every way, supple with much breed. A beauty'. And so it was: I have not one bad note amongst the eighteen made since 1956. It was an early developer, easy to drink but I think achieving perfection in the 1970s including pretty good but not great Harvey's bottling in 1976...By the mid-1980s, the normal chateau-bottled wine had maturity, a fairly deep appearance but was showing orange-tinged maturity, its nose and flavour being fully developed. Around this time I noted vanilla, fennel, cedar, spice on the nose. It was not as sweet as expected but full and fleshy. However, after the Médocs, relatively four square and lacking finesse. In 1990 a lively fragrance, firm though beginning to show a touch of end acidity. Most recently, a perfect magnum at the Eigensatz tasting in Wiesbaden. Last tasted May 1993. At best *****"
