PRE COLUMBIAN PERUVIAN TEXTILES Ancient Peruvian textiles belong to the most spectacular artifacts of world archeology. Splendid colours, complex designs and ingenious techniques, testify of deified status of Andean elite. An extensive ancestor cult demanded massive production of textiles for the embellishment of ancestral mummies. The Peruvian coastal desert, with virtually no precipitation, preserved the phenomenal Paracas mantles, made two thousand years ago (lot number 88), the mesmerizing designs of tie-dyed textiles of the Middle Horizon (lot number 75) and the royal dress of Inca rulers (lot number 90). The Kemper collection of Pre Columbian Peruvian textiles presents an impressive survey, with the padded Chimu uncu (lot number 94) as an absolute highlight. The importance of the Kemper collection may be proven by two mayor exhibitions, 'Ancient Peruvian Art' at the Arts Council in London 1962 and 'Alt Peru, Die Sammlung Kemper' in the Landesmuseum in Münster 1972.
