The present lot is an attractive view of the marketplace of Hildesheim, a city located along the river Innerste in Lower Saxony. The right half of the painting is taken up by the magnificent Gothic Town hall which was erected in the 13th Century. Several groups of townspeople are going about their daily activities, including a couple who have brought their donkey to drink from the fountain. Springer has allowed the sculpture of a noble knight bearing a spear and shield on top of the fountain to contrast intensely with the sky, forming a focal point within the overall composition.
