A VINTAGE TO BUY, A VINTAGE TO DRINK, A VINAGE TO CELLAR
BORDEAUX VINTAGE 1998 NOW IN BOTTLE
"From the beginning, it was obvious that the Médoc had problems with high tannin in what appeared to be under-ripe Cabernet Sauvignon. That seemed to plague many of the wines throughout their élèvage. However, now that they are in bottle, there is no question that the tannin has sweetened. Moreover, many of the better Médocs have gained weight. They are showing more balance, depth, and harmony than I would have expected two years ago. While it is not a great year for the Médoc, some profound wines have been produced, with at least two wines, Lafite-Rothschild and rival Mouton-Rothschild, representing candidates for the wine of the vintage. Many Médocs have not moved in price because of the publics skepticism about their quality. Those wines where the tannin has become better integrated offer excellent drinking. Overall, 1998 in the Médoc, built along the classic lines of 1988, has turned out to be a very good vintage. Such older vintages as 1970 and 1966 may also provide an accurate point of reference, even though much has changed in Bordeaux over the last 3-4 decades."

Château Margaux--Vintage 1998
Margaux, 1er cru classé
All lots in original wooden case
Parcel: lots 55-57
"The 1998 Margaux's color is a dense ruby/purple. The wine is tannic and austere, but elegant, with notes of asphalt, blackberries, acacia flowers, and sweet, toasty oak. Subtle, rich, nicely-textured, and medium-bodied, it is built for the long haul. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2030." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate #134 (April 2001)
