Lot Essay

Commissioned by the American magazine The Chap Book, Chicago as an advertisement in the French magazine La Plume. The poster shows one of Lautrec's favorite bars frequented by a horse racing crowd. The figure on the far right is the Rothschild family's coachman, Tom. The bartender, Ralph, was a San Franciscan Chinese-American Indian.
