Lot Essay
The enamel scene on the present watch is signed AC for Pierre-Amédée Champod (1834 - 1913), one of Geneva's most celebrated enamel and miniature painter and illustrator of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He studied with the artists Huguenin, Sauerländer and Charles Glardon (see lot 272 in this auction), who had the strongest impact on his style.
Champod excelled in his lifelike hunting scenes but was also renowned for his beautiful landscape and floral motifs which decorated the finest timepieces destined for the Indian and Chinese markets. His enamel miniatures can be found on watches of celebrated manufacturers such as Bovet, Vaucher, Vrard, Courvoisier Frères, Maurice Ditisheim and others.
For Champod's autobiography and description and illustrations of his work see La Montre Chinois by Alfred Chapuis, pp. 192 - 194, plates pp. 152, 192 and 212.
The movement of the present watch is fitted with a micrometer regulator as patented by Ernest Francillon, founder of Longines Watch Co. (Swiss patent No. 3884, registered on 31 August 1891).
