With gilt-finished movement, virgule escapement, gilt cuvette, the white enamel dial with Breguet numerals, four subsidiary dials indicating day, month, Republican or decimal date and standard date, in possibly later circular plain case with engine-turned hinged back, cuvette and dial signed

Lot Essay

The French Republican Calendar, dividing the month into three "décades" of 10 days each, was introduced during the French Revolution in the decree of 5 October 1793, simultaneously with the decimal time. Although clocks and watches were produced indicating both standard and decimal time and date, the system never caught on and was officially suspended on 7 April 1795.
