Lot Essay

These marble-topped tables are designed in the George II 'Roman' fashion popularized by the Rome-trained artist William Kent (d.1748). The dolphin, entwined and supporting a shell, emblematic of Venus, evokes The Triumph of Love. A related table from Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire, was sold Christie's, London, 22 May 1967, lot 15 and another from Syon Park, Middlesex, was offered Sotheby's, Syon Park Sale, 14-16 May 1997, lot 32.
