Lot Essay

The chair pattern compares closely to an example from Boyton House, Wiltshire as illustrated in P. Macquoid and R. Edwards, The Dictionary of English Furniture, 1927, vol. I, p. 237, fig. 91. While the fashion for this form was revived in the early 19th century as produced by Gillows (a pattern appears in their Estimate Sketch Book of 1827), eighteenth century examples such as the present example are a rarity.
