Lot Essay

The chair is conceived in the French antique fashion of the 1770s promoted by many of the finest London cabinet-makers of the time, including John Cobb, Thomas Chippendale and John Linnell. Most strikingly similar in design is a drawing circa 1775 by John Linnell for a sofa (illustrated in P. Ward-Jackson, English Furniture Designs of the Eighteenth Century, London, 1958, fig. 245) although no definitive attribution can be established.

A suite of furniture of virtually identical design - including armchairs, window benches and a sofa - was sold from the Newport estate of Guy Fairfax Cary, Christie's, New York, 18 October 2005, lots 556-558.
