Lot Essay

The bookcases' glazing pattern, with pointed arches, relates to that of a Grecian bookcase pattern published in Thomas Sheraton's, The Cabinet-Maker, Upholsterer, and General Artist's Encyclopaedia, 1804. Its palm-wrapped and truss-scrolled pilasters terminating in Bacchic liow-paws reflects the more robust Grecian fashion adopted during the following decade by cabinet-makers such as William Trotter of Edinburgh (see F. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers', Furniture History, 1983, pls. 52a-56).
