Lot Essay

The present two paintings are probably part of a set of four pictures representing the four seasons and all twelve signs of the zodiac.

We are grateful to Mr. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague for confirming the attribution after inspection of the original (verbal communication, 15 March 2007). He believes that the Pseudo van Kessel is possibly an Italian artist.
