Lot Essay

Dietrich is known for his pastiches after works by famous 17th century masters, especially those of Rembrandt. The present composition is a clever reworking of Rembrandt's etching with a man wearing a fur headdress depicted in profile, the so-called Second Oriental Head (see C. White and K. Boon, Rembrandt's Etchings, p. 137, no. B. 287).
