The present view shows, on the left, the ramps of the quay of Ripa Grande by the Customs House, behind which rises the tower of the church of Santa Maria in Torre. On the right, at the foot of the Aventine hill, is the Via Marmorata.

The composition closely resembles a picture in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (see D. Bodart, Rubens e la pittura fiamminga del Seicento nelle collezioni pubbliche fiorentine, Florence, 1977, p. 311, illustrated).
