Lot Essay

In 1682 Schoevaerdts was apprenticed to Adriaen Frans Boudewijns. Like his master, he painted mostly scenes from everyday life in Flanders set in landscapes of which the present picture is a beautiful example. They followed the example of Jan Brueghel the Elder living a century earlier. The pendant to this composition was sold with Sotheby's, London, 6 July 1983, lot 24.
