Lot Essay

The present composition is based on an altarpiece by Federico Barrocci in the chapel of the Confraternita della Croce e Sagremento in Senigallia that was widely known through a print by Aegidius Sadeler. Balthazar Beschey is known to have made numerous painted copies after prints by, among others, Rubens and Rembrandt.
