Lot Essay

The pictures appear to be in their original carved and giltwood frames supplied by Thomas Fentham. (see label on the stretcher of the portrait of a boy). Fentham was one of the most fashionable frame makers of the Period. A comparable label is to be found, datable to 1779-80, on the frame of George Romney's Portrait of Mrs Beal Bonnell in the (Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge) which would confirm our dating of the present pictures to circa 1780.
