Lot Essay

The motif of the earthenware jug with tulips and other flowers appeared in Leech's work from the 1930s onwards, whilst he was working in Steele's Studios. In the present work the tulips are in full bud, with a high viewpoint which emphasises the rounded form of the vase and buds, the light catching on the flat planes of the tulip leaves.
