Gerard Festus Kelly was of Irish descent, although he was born and raised in London. Kelly's family wealth enabled him to travel to France, visiting the studios of artists such as Monet, Renoir, Degas and Sickert. His wealth also enabled him to travel as far as Burma, in 1908, where he was to see and be greatly influenced by the colours and sights of this exotic land. Between the two world wars he also travelled in Italy, Spain and France.

After Kelly's death his whole estate was sold at Christie's 8 February 1980. The present work is not detailed within the catalogue, which suggests that Kelly had given this painting away during his own lifetime.
