Her father Hendrik de Bas, a notary in Zutphen, was a member of a local Society of Glass Collectors and an active collector. After Hendrik's death in 1881, the couple inherited his collection. This formed the core of the collection of Albrecht Nicolaas who then started collecting from 1882 onwards until his death in 1903. Albrecht Nicolaas' style of collecting was typical of the second half of the 19th century, comparable to other prominent Dutch glass collections such as those of Abraham Willet, David Henriques de Castro and Adriaan J. Enschedé. This style not only reflected nationalistic interest in the Dutch Golden Age but also with strong emphasis on themed glass. Seventeen years after the death of Albrecht Nicolaas, his widow Baroness J.J.A. de Vos van Steenwijk- de Bas (1853-1929) loaned the collection out to the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem, which was located in the town where she resided. This long-term loan act was officially signed by her and August van Erven Dorens, Director of the Gemeentemuseum Arnhem on the 6th of April 1920. In 1995 the collection was moved to the Historisch Museum Arnhem or H.M.A. and displayed in a more appropriate period setting. The loan agreement for The Albrecht Nicolaas Baron de Vos van Steenwijk glass collection, formed with 160 objects (approximately 45 of the total glass inventory of the Historisch Museum Arnhem) was finally terminated in January 2007.
