Swanzy may have made several visits to the west of Ireland, painting coastal and mountainous landscapes in a bold, vigorous style. Some of the paintings have the relaxed quality of Nathaniel Hone's landscapes, with expressive, cloudy skies, while others suggest the influence of the Impressionists or Cézanne. The present work may date to 1943. Although the canvas is quite small in scale, Swanzy takes a panoramic view of the wild countryside and mountain ranges of Co. Donegal under dramatic, cloudy skies. She captures the pink and violet tones of the landscape in shadow, but also the pale pink hue of the low mountains to the left, echoed by the pink in the cloud above, and the powerful white clouds sweeping in from the right. The picture is framed by a pale yellow hill in the foreground.
