Mary Swanzy visited Yugoslavia in circa 1920, and this boldly-painted landscape may be of the Dalmatian or Italian coastline. It shows a corniche road with tall poplar trees, set against a sparkling bay, and mountainous coastline, with a village of white-washed houses. Swanzy enjoyed such sunny coastal scenes, with a dramatic perspective and enticing blue sea. Influenced particularly by Cézanne, she brings the background landscape close to the picture plane. But she paints in a bold, vigorous style on to a coarse-weave canvas.
