This picture is characteristic of the vigorous landscapes that Swanzy executed on her journey to Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia circa 1920-21. But the areas of snow lying on the bare rocky mountains that rise above the small village and the ochre-coloured hills, add an alluring wintry atmosphere to the painting. The white of the snow is echoed by the bright, drifting clouds, and the white-washed churches which rise out of the grey rooftops of the village. Swanzy paints with broad strokes of pigment upon a rough-grained canvas.
