Lydia Sherwood (1906-1989) was a British actress who made her stage debut in the mid 1920s. Sherwood's first and major screen role was in Little Friend in 1934. In addition to extensive theatre work on both sides of the Atlantic, Sherwood also made the occasional feature film. Her career continued through into the 1960s.
Mark Gertler created three works of Lydia Sherwood when he met her in 1927 at Garsington. The present work is one example of this small group of pictures. Gertler dressed Sherwood into an embroided peasant smock and a spotted red scarf around her neck for the sitting.

We are very grateful to Luke Gertler for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
