Lot Essay

Alfred Wolmark was born in Warsaw and came to England at the age of six. He was hailed as the doyen of a remarkable new generation of painters which included Sir Jacob Epstein, David Bomberg and Mark Gertler. The present work was painted in 1915 and provides us with a glimpse at an example of his early work. In the formative years of Wolmark's career, he painted portaits and figurative compositions with mainly Jewish subject matter. Paintings like Jewish women in conversation and other works of this period gained Wolmark great acclaim for their strong characterisation.
