A very unusual balloon globe to be inflated to a diameter of four feet. This was the largest of the three sizes of balloon globe produced by Pocock. George Pocock settled in Bristol and set up his own boarding school for 'young gentlemen'. He was something of an amateur inventor and constructed a carriage powered by Kites, and a spanking machine. The letterpress instructions explain how to inflate the balloon and how to use the special tape scale, with which one can calculate time around the world, longitude, latitude, distance, and time of sunrise and sunset. The survival of the tape is very unusual. Dekker, Globes at Greenwich GLB 0230.
