HURGRONJE, Christian Snouck (1857-1936).
Bilder-Atlas zu Mekka. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff, 1888. 2° (378 x 281mm). 40 numbered plates, loose in portfolio as issued, comprising 65 mounted collotypes on 30 plates, 6 tinted lithographs, including one folding, and 4 chromolithographs by P. W. M. Trap of Islamic cult objects (scattered spotting, mostly marginal, some short tears to edges of a few mounts). Original printed boards (extremities rubbed, spine split). Provenance: H. J. ATLAS VOLUME TO THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF HURGRONJE'S MEKKA -- AMONGST THE EARLIEST PUBLISHED PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE HOLY CITY, BY ONE OF ITS LEADING PHOTOGRAPHERS AND ONE OF THE FIRST NON-ARAB PHOTOGRAPHERS OF THE HIJAZ. 'Hurgronje has given us a rare and unique archive of photographs of the Hijaz, and of Makkah in particular' (Badr el-Hage, p.46). Hurgronje, a Dutch philologist and Orientalist, Professor at Leiden University from 1906, and adviser to the Dutch government on Arabian affairs and the Dutch East Indies, travelled in Arabia from 1884 to 1885. His important photographs, resulting from a six-month stay in Mecca in 1885, document the area before Western modernization, recording 'pilgrims from all over the Islamic world, in addition to the sharif of Makkah, the Turkish governor, and various religious and secular figures' (Badr el-Hage, p.46). These photographs include two by Muhammed Sadiq Bey, one of the pioneers of Arabian photography. Cf. Badr el-Hage Saudi Arabia Caught in Time (Reading: 1997).
