Educated at French boarding schools, Mrs. Gerst began to travel the world widely after the end of World War II, and it was this experience that first piqued her interest in collecting art. She accumulated works of art and antiques from her travels throughout the world. In 1953, aged forty-five, Mrs. Gerst committed herself to her passion by opening her renowned art gallery on Madison Avenue, Hilde Gerst Gallery, which she directed and operated until she passed away at age 98 in July 2006. Mrs. Gerst was not only a formidable businesswoman but a captivating entertainer. An expert in the fields of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist art, Mrs. Gerst assembled a wide range of high quality works for sale in her gallery in the ground floor of the Carlyle Hotel, where devoted clients and art advisors would frequently visit. Mrs. Gerst was also deeply involved in local and national political affairs, serving as a member of the Foreign Policy Association. The Impressionist and Modern Evening and Day sales will present a selection of works from Mrs. Gerst's collection by such varied artists as Marc Chagall, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Marie Laurencin, Maurice de Vlaminck, Albert André, Henri Lebasque, and Raoul Dufy, among many others. A true asset to the field of Impressionist and Modern Art during her lifetime, Mrs. Gerst is survived by her rich legacy of knowledge and appreciation for Impressionist and Modern art, an ardor which she has passed on to so many others. Christie's is pleased to offer Marc Chagall's Cirque au cheval rouge as lot 43 and Les marié au bouquet de fleurs as lot 79 in our Impressionist and Modern Evening sale on May 9th and the following 37 lots in our Impressionist and Modern Day sale on May 10th.
