Lot Essay

Ilse Holzinger has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.

Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky met in 1902, when Münter enrolled in a painting class at the Jugendstil in Munich taught by Kandinsky. They became engaged soon after, spending time in Berlin, Munich and Murnau, and in 1913 they formed the Blaue Reiter group with Franz Marc, Auguste Macke and Paul Klee. At the outbreak of the First World War, Münter and Kandinsky moved to Switzerland and shortly thereafter Kandinsky returned to his native Russia and Münter moved to Stockholm. The couple briefly reunited in Stockholm in 1916 but permanantly separated very soon after. This tumultuous period in Münter's life resulted in more emotionally wrought pictures with a dramatic and darker palette.
