Professor Theodore Reff has confirmed the authenticity of this work.
This sheet is a counterproof of the charcoal and pastel drawing Femme se lavant dans sa baignoire, circa 1895 (fig. 1; Lemoisne, no. 1121; Musée d'Orsay). It was made before the intense red and blue pastel was added to the charcoal drawing, since there are no traces of those colors on the sheet. The series of related bather works on paper (Lemoisne, nos. 1120-1122) includes another counterproof (Lemoisne, no. 1121 ter) of a charcoal and pastel drawing. (Lemoisne, no. 1121 bis). Degas used this method with increasing frequency in his later years.
(fig. 1) Edgar Degas, Femme se lavant dans sa baignoire, circa 1892. Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
