Lot Essay

Wanda de Guébriant has confirmed the authenticity of this work.

This work was drawn by Matisse as part of the entrance examination for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on 18 February 1895. Having applied for a position at the academy four years in a row, he was finally accepted in 1895 and went on to study under Gustave Moreau, who annotated the reverse of the present drawing.
