Lot Essay

Serge Lifar, considered one of the best male ballet dancers of the 20th century, was the premier danseur and director of the Paris Opéra Ballet from 1929-1957. In 1936-1937, Lifar staged the ballet David Triomphant and commissioned his friend Léger to design sets and costumes for the prestigious company. Lifar and Léger gifted this costume study for David Triomphant to James Johnson Sweeney's young daughter Ann.

Lifar signed, inscribed, titled and dedicated this work to Ann: 'Les admirables costumes pour ce ballet par mon ami Fernand Legér [sic] S.L GOLIATH and the Girl of Saül David Triomphant Ballet de Serge Lifar Paris 1936 Happy New Year 37 Ann Sweeney'
