James Johnson Sweeney is remembered as one of the most eminent and influential directors of the Museum of Modern Art, New York (1935-1946), the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1952-1960) and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (1961-1968). Not only was he an erudite art historian, author and critic, he was a champion and beloved friend of many artists including Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso and Fernand Léger, whose works figured into his superb personal collection of modern art.
