Mrs. Barbro Noel-Baker was living in Beijing in the 1950s working for the Swedish Embassy. She visited the artist's studio in person and asked him to paint a painting for him. The artisit then gave the painting to her as a gift. The inscription Su Nande Xiaojie qing zheng, 'for Ms. Su Nande's comment', refers to her maiden name, Sonander.
