This rare cloisonné enamel censer is based on a Shang prototype, such as the example in the British Museum, illustrated by William Watson in Ancient Chinese Bronzes, London, 1962, fig. A. Successive dynasies have made their own versions of this iconic shape. Compare the bronze example sold in these Rooms, 9th June 1997, lot 21, dated Song dynasty or later; the Ming example in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated in Through the Prism of the Past: Antiquarian Trends in Chinese Art of the 16th to 18th century, National Palace Museum, Taipei, 2003, p. 146, III-10.
