Such large blue and white meiping are either decorated with phoenix or dragons. Jessica Harrison-Hall notes in Ming Ceramics that eight blue and white meiping of this form, still with their covers, were discovered in the Wanli emperor's tomb, the Ding Ling. They were among the relatively few porcelains discovered there when the tomb was investigated.
A similar vase was sold in our Paris Rooms, 22 November 2006, lot 282. Another is illustrated in The World's Great Collections, Oriental Ceramics, Vol. 8, Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities, Stockholm, Kodansha 1982, pl. 246 ; another one was sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 2 May 2005, lot 646.
